...............Creating a Foundation for a Lifetime of Learning!
How do I know if my child can benefit from your program? Is your child anxious about school? Do they get poor grades despite being intelligent? Does your student desire to learn things differently than the methods used at their school? Are they dealing with a learning difference or disability? Are you looking for accelerated growth for an exceptional student? If so, your student is an ideal candidate for one of our programs. We are confident that we can help, no matter what your concerns are.
Why should I choose Summit Reading Center?Since our focus is on the underlying processes involved in learning, we solve the problems as opposed to treating the symptoms. More than a tutor who offers expertise in a specific subject matter, we work to recognize and remediate fundamental weaknesses that can cause poor academic achievement.
I am looking for a tutor to help my child with homework in a specific subject, can you help with that? Yes, we offer homework help and study skills for students in all subjects. Groups for after school homework help are available and group rates apply.
What is Academic/Educational Therapy? From the Association of Educational Therapists:"Educational therapy is a process that combines an understanding of how individuals learn, the ways in which feelings can impact learning, and knowledge of specialized teaching methods."
Are you a franchise? No, we are100% independent and locally and family owned and operated. When you work with the team at Summit, there are no outside interests influencing the work or demanding a share of the fees. Because of this, we can offer professional, high quality services at an affordable price with unparalleled customer service and local accountability.
What questions should I ask a tutor or academic therapist before hiring? Hiring a professional educator for supplemental help can seem complicated and frustrating. Interview them as you would any professional.
Here is a list of potential questions to ask: - What is your educational background? - Where did you get your training? - What professional organizations are you affilitated with? - What research supports the methods you use? - How do you evaluate and measure progress? - How do you communicate with and involve parents and teachers? - Who will be working with my child?
It is also important to see if the professional is recommended; you can do this by asking for references and following up on them. Most importantly, bring your student to meet the instructors in the environment where the lessons take place. After all, your student is 50% of the learning team and chemistry and comfort level are crucial.Don't hesitate to ask if you can watch the instructor engage your child in a short lesson to see their approach in action.
Other tutoring and learning centers have teachers with education degrees for their instructors. That sounds important, do you hire classroom teachers?Since one-on-one instruction is fundamentally different than classroom instruction, when we hire individuals with degrees in education or experience in the classroom, we train them just as we do our other staff. We engage in techniques and have resources that are not available to classroom teachers.
What are the qualifications of your instructors? All of our instructors have completed at minimum an undergraduate level of education. We hire instructors with experience and degrees in psychology, therapy, education, and human development and then give them the tools to become effective educators. All of our instructors undergo intensive training in multi-sensory instruction methods and conversational techniques for working one-on-one. Our staff participates in ongoing training and continuing education in the latest research in literacy and learning as part of their position here at Summit.
Do you guarantee your services?Since we work with many different types of individuals, including those with severe challenges, it is not consistent with our methods to advertise such promises. Besides, guarantees can encourage teachers to "teach to the test".
My son is struggling in science and history class, can you help? Yes, multi-sensory instruction in language comprehension and memory gives students the tools to access and utilize the content they are learning in school.
Do you work with foreign language speakers that are looking to improve their English skills?Yes, learning through a multi-sensory approach gives foreign language speakers quick and long lasting tools for fluency, expression, and comprehension in the English language. Starting with phonemic awareness and common word patterns, we find and fill all the gaps. We have experience with both kids and adults that are foreign language speakers.
Can you tell me about the typical student at Summit? Our average student is in 2nd or 3rd grade, but we also work with adults and kids as young as kindergarten. We also work with high school and college students on the underlying skills that enable them to perform better in their education and score higher on standardized tests.
Do you offer your programs in small group sessions?More and more, we are being asked to offer group sessions. If you are interested in working in a group, call us and we will help you determine if group work will be effective for your needs.
My child doesn't have a learning disability, but we are looking for a program to give her an extra advantage in school, can you do that?Yes, our programs are proven to be highly effective for all types of students. We work at the level and pace of each student, improving comprehension and fluency to gain that extra advantage in school and beyond. Enrolling in a program at Summit will help your child increase grades and test scores, which leads to getting scholarships and admission to the college of their choice.
Do you conduct academic evaluations?Yes, every student begins with an assessment which consists of a battery of tests. We also conduct progress and post evaluations to monitor progress.
